Christmas Gift of Joy Special Offering

This year you dug a well, started a sustainable agriculture project, and built a worship space in Africa. You helped people transition from homelessness to stable situations of living and working in Birmingham. You built a Habitat House. You fed, comforted, and housed survivors of the spring tornadoes. You trained young mothers for work and parenting. You provided medical care for hundreds of people in Panama.

These are all things that you helped Trinity accomplish through the Christmas Gift of Joy. All of the money we collect for the Christmas Gift of Joy goes to missions beyond the church walls, 85% of which is spent here in Birmingham in ministries with the poor. We do this because we take seriously the command of Jesus to love God with our whole being and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

At Christmas, advertisers encourage us to spend lavishly on our own families and friends. But the message of the gospel is to lavish our love and resources on strangers, on the hungry, the sick, and the imprisoned. “If you love only those who love you, what reward do you have?” Jesus asks in Matthew 5:46. By serving the least, he says, we serve Jesus himself (Matthew 25:31-36). He not only speaks these words, but he also embodies them by being born in a stable to a poor family.

This season, pray about what you would like Trinity to accomplish in 2012 among homeless persons, young mothers, survivors of disasters, and those in chronic poverty. Perhaps commit to giving a percentage of what you will spend on gifts. Give generously, and celebrate with joy the ministry we will share in the New Year.

Yours in Christ,

Dave Barnhart

Donate to the Community Furniture Bank!

Have furniture you’ve out-grown? Donate it now to the Community Furniture Bank!

It is so sad to see various types of usable furniture sitting out on the street waiting to be picked up by the garbage truck. We in Homewood are blessed with so much that it’s easy to loose perspective as to what’s valuable. Sadly, people who have lost everything—or who do not have anything to start with—would be delighted to gain some of the things we throw away, even if they are “gently used.” One of our Trinity members, Chris Yarboro, has started the COMMUNITY FURNITURE BANK. This is a wonderful ministry which picks up and transports your old or unused furniture to a warehouse, and then works with area agencies to deliver it to individuals in need.

Refrigerators and appliances are especially needed. For furniture pickup, call the Community Furniture Bank at (205) 942-2727, Visit their website at http://www.communityfurniturebank.org.

By donating instead of adding more “stuff” to our landfills, you can help save the planet, too!

October spotlight: The Church of Restoration

Stop by the Commons Area this Sunday to learn about the amazing things the Church of Restoration is doing in the Birmingham area. Operated by Rev. Al Lewis and his wife, Pashion, this remarkable ministry offers an after-school program for children, a food bank, and a rehabilitation program for drug addicts.

In the after school and summer program for elementary and high school students – called the Dream Garden Ministry – Pashion Lewis continually needs volunteers to offer help with study and companionship to the students in her care. Most of the students are from varying types of backgrounds and may not have routine input from adults. They may be in poverty circumstances.

In the addiction clinic located at the church parsonage, Rev. Al Lewis helps those overcoming drug and alcohol dependency. One of Al’s beneficiaries from the recovery clinic is Brother Moore, who has become an all around servant at the mission and now oversees the food pantry.

Volunteers are welcome, including Jr. and Sr. high students. Several Trinity students currently participate once a week in the after school ministry. They are successfully encouraging the youngsters they have made friends with to come and enjoy ELEMENT student ministry at Trinity.

Questions? Email Ken Stalnaker at klstalnak@bellsouth.net or call 283-5682. Please come by the 2nd floor commons area on Sunday and learn how you can help!

One of the most vital ministries which Trinity supports is that of SIFAT, which stands for Servants in Faith and Technology. Based in Lineville, Alabama, SIFAT is one of our partners with whom we have sent mission teams to Ecuador, Bolivia, and Zambia.

SIFAT’s mission is to share God’s love in practical ways, using appropriate, sustainable technology in countries where they work. Recently, SIFAT hosted guests from Haiti, Nigeria, and India. For several weeks at the Lineville campus, they learned skills which they will take back to communities in their home countries. They learned everything from how to build a rocket stove to how to deliver a baby, purify water using car batteries and salt, and how to make a community plan for economic development. SIFAT students are pastors, missionaries, and agents of change in their own communities. You can visit SIFAT’s website at http://www.sifat.org.
