How Trinity Members can reach out to Haiti
Mar. 1, 2010 Dave BarnhartYou can respond to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti over the next several weeks in two ways.
To make a special offering simply write “Haiti Response” on your check or on the outside of your offering envelope. The collected offering will go to UMCOR. The United Methodist Committee on Relief, is our world-wide relief agency. UMCOR was already present in Haiti before the earthquake hit. Some UMCOR staff remain missing after the earthquakes. UMCOR is an agency with the reputation of “first in, last out.” They are often the first to be on the scene with food, medical supplies, and relief professionals. Their disaster response lasts for years after the media leaves and others forget. 100% of your donation to the special offering will go to UMCOR’s relief efforts. You can look at UMCOR’s exceptional record by visiting the website Charity Navigator.
Also, a much needed item for every individual displaced by the earthquate and living in temporary shelter is a health kit, which consists of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other small necessities. This is a great project for you, your family, children or Sunday School class. Trinity’s Seniors have made dozens this past week. (To join the Seniors in this effort, call Amy Lewis). Instructions for making health kits can be found here or here (downloadable pdf. We will receive completed kits or kit materials at collection points in the Narthex and the Commons of the church building. These health kits will go to the Sager Brown distribution center in Louisiana, which sends relief supplies to UMCOR field workers to distribute to disaster survivors.
Please also continue to be in prayer for the people of Haiti, for their friends and families who wait anxiously for word of their loved ones, and for the relief staff who are working and missing in Haiti.
